Leipzig Monument to Freedom & Unity
Designer & Artist, 2012
As part of the collaborative design team Bristol Studio BS5, we were shortlisted in 2012 to design a monument for the City of Leipzig in Germany to represent freedom and unity and the peaceful protest of the 9th October 1989.
A proposal of 260 slender mirrored steel rods that will flex and bend in the wind allowing movement in monument and a space for contemplation, along with an additional 100 spotlights set in an expanse of pale limestone. The layout mirrors the constellations over Leipzig as they would have been seen above on the night in question; a frozen moment locating the protest in space and time.
